Deer Grove Spring Flower Hike Sunday

May 25 @ 10:00 am 12:30 pm

Woodland ephemeral flowers (Spring flowers) are blooming at Deer Grove West. They only bloom in the Spring when the trees’ leaves have not shaded the ground. These beautiful little flowers put on a very colorful show that fades as the trees begin to fill in with leaves. Spring is the time to see this unique flower show at the nation’s very first forest preserve, Deer Grove.

Difficulty level: Our hike will be on paved trails and single-track dirt paths. There are a few hills but no difficult terrain. The pace will be leisurely with time spent observing the flowers and other features of the preserve. Tree roots can be trip hazards and they will be present as we hike through the woods. Hikers should use caution and be aware of trip hazards as they occur.

Parking/Meeting location: Meet at Deer Grove West Grove 5. Enter off of Quentin Road and at the fork in the road just after entering, stay to the right. Grove 5 is the last grove. Our group will meet at the volunteer kiosk near the first parking spaces in Grove 5.

Meet your volunteer guide: Steve has been a volunteer at Deer Grove since 2009 and a workday leader since 2021. Steve is an avid hiker, cyclist, and camper. He spends much of his free time hiking and cycling in Cook and Lake County forest preserves, but his favorite preserve of all is Deer Grove.

What to bring/wear: Dress for the weather and bring water. Wear good sturdy shoes/boots.

This event is free, but please register to secure your spot. If you have any questions about this walk or the Trailblazers Walking Series, contact Sydney Armstead, Engagement Program Manager, at [email protected].
