Please join us as we explore the various birds in Thatcher Woods, visit the raptor rescue exhibit, and discover other wildlife in this suburban forest preserve.

During the walk we’ll cover the following topics, among others:

  • Enjoy a casual walk in the woods on a cement-paved path encircling the pond and the red-marked primitive trail going around the woods North of Chicago Ave.
  • Visit the raptors and talk about the birds on display.
  • Allow time for some bird watching by the bird feeders to the East & North of the main building.

Difficulty level: Older adults who want a slower-paced, quiet walk.  Easy to moderate, up to 2 hours.

Parking/Meeting location: at the Thatcher Woods Trailside Museum at Thatcher and Chicago Ave., River Forest (parking lot of Chicago Avenue) west of Thatcher on the South side of Chicago Ave. and gather at the entrance to the trail in the parking lot.

What to bring/wear: Water, sunscreen, comfortable clothing/shoes, mosquito/tick repellent, and rain poncho if needed.

Meet your volunteer guide: As a lifetime resident of Cook County, Martha has explored the forest preserves since she was a young child. She has done quite a bit of horseback riding through the Palos area exploring the trails, flora, and fauna. She studied natural history including geology, ecology, general earth science, and Native American Nations as well as general history in college.
