Trailblazers Walk: Busse Woods Deep Forest Hike

September 1, 2022: 4:00 PM6:00 PM
Free

Did you know there is a herd of Elk in Elk Grove Village?  On this hike, we’ll walk the exterior of the pasture and have an opportunity to get photos.  I’ll give a brief introduction to Busse woods and the history of the Elk.  We’ll then do a hike in the forest on a combination of asphalt and hard-packed dirt trails.

Difficulty level: Easy with Moderate areas.  There will be 50% asphalt trails shared with bikes and 50% rustic forest hard-packed dirt trails.  There are no hills, but be prepared to walk over unlevel terrain with tree roots in the hard-packed dirt areas.  The dirt trails are sometimes narrow single file.  There were no muddy areas when I visited. Mileage: 3.4 miles total mostly shaded.

Parking/Meeting location: Busse Elk Pasture. Located on the Northwest corner of Arlington Heights Road and Higgins. Driving East down Higgins Road, make a left turn on Arlington Heights Road and immediately turn left into the parking lot.

Meet your volunteer guide: Lynette has led her own hiking group in the north branch preserves for several years. She loves leisurely walks that focus on wellness and immersion in nature while socializing with local members.

Driving West down Higgins Road, make a right-hand turn on Arlington Heights road and immediately turn left into the parking lot.

Meet at the kiosk sign near restroom facilities. I will be holding a sign “Friends of Forest Preserves” and wearing a Trailblazers shirt.

This event is free, but please register to secure your spot. If you have any questions about this walk or the Trailblazers Walking Series, contact Sydney Armstead, Engagement Program Manager, at sydney@fotfp.org.
