Trailblazers Walk: Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center
Enjoy an early morning hike on the Yellow Trail to Horse Collar Slough in Willow Springs. Come see the biodiversity created by the kettles and moraines, unique features of this woodland and prairie landscape.
During the walk with will discuss and learn about:
- How this land was transformed after the last ice age, from early greening to old growth oak forest
- The flora and fauna unique to this area
Difficulty level: Intermediate trail
Parking: Please use the back parking lot. We will meet at the entrance to White Oaks Trail
What to bring: Hiking shoes or boots, mosquito and tick repellent, sunscreen, plenty of water and/or sports drinks for hydration, trail snacks like granola bars. Optional: Binoculars and cameras, walking sticks or poles, ball caps or sweat bands.
Martha will be your guide: As a lifetime resident of Cook County, Martha has explored the forest preserves since she was a young child. She has done quite a bit of horseback riding through the Palos area exploring the trails, flora, and fauna. She studied natural history including geology, ecology, general earth science, and Native American Nations as well as general history in college.
