Trailblazers – Thatcher Woods Health Walk
Please join us as we walk and share fun facts about the flora at Thatcher Woods as it beds down for winter. We’ll also discuss how to keep ourselves active during the colder, late autumn/early winter months. With the trees more barren, birds and other fauna may be seen more easily. We’re hoping to spot juncos and woodpeckers, among others!
Difficulty level: Moderately paced walk for adults or families—ability to climb stairs and overcome obstacles such as fallen trees. Approximately 2 miles lasting 1 to 1.5 hours. Start on the Red Trail and walk through one of the connecting trails to Maple Grove and return to the Parking area.
Parking/Meeting location: In front of the Thatcher Woods Pavilion. The parking lot is the easternmost entry on the North side of Chicago Avenue. Drive directly to the parking lot where CCC Building is located. Meet in front of the building by the stairs.
Meet your volunteer guide: Martha has explored the forest preserves since she was a young child. She has done quite a bit of horseback riding through the Palos area exploring the trails, flora, and fauna. She studied natural history including geology, ecology, general earth science, and Native American Nations as well as general history in college.
What to bring/wear: Good pair of walking shoes or boots. Dress according to the weather.
This event is free, but please register to secure your spot. If you have any questions about this walk or the Trailblazers Walking Series, contact Sydney Armstead, Engagement Program Manager, at sydney@fotfp.org.
