Trailblazers: Mary Oliver Poetry Walk in Miami Woods

September 29: 11:00 AM1:00 PM

Join us as we appreciate the poetry of Mary Oliver and attempt to experience nature as her body of work implores us to. The group will walk through the prairie area down a small decline to the Chicago River, stopping to read Oliver’s poems along the way. Towards the end of the walk, you will be given the option to either write a poem inspired by her work or do a private meditation in an area of your choosing.

Challenge Level: The walk will be moderately paced and be an out-and-back type of walk.

Parking/meeting location: This event takes place at Miami Woods Picnic Grove (8201 North Caldwell Avenue Morton Grove, IL 60053.) We’ll gather just inside the entrance on Caldwell near the white sign.

Meet your Volunteer Guide: Jack moved to Chicago this past January and soon got involved doing ecological stewardship for the Forest Preserves of Cook County, a co-led a high school conservation crew this summer. Prior to moving to Chicago, he led backpacking trips in the Adirondacks for his college’s orientation program. In school, he studied philosophy, environmental studies, and art. Jack is a songwriter with an appreciation for poetry.

What to bring/wear: Please dress weather appropriately and bring water for hydration. You have the option of bringing a notebook and pen if you wish to participate in the optional writing activity. Sun and insect protection is also recommended.

This event is free, but please register to secure your spot. If you have any questions about this walk or the Trailblazers Walking Series, contact Sydney Armstead, Engagement Program Manager, at sydney@fotfp.org.
