Trailblazers Earth Day Walk at Deer Grove

April 22: 11:00 AM1:00 PM

In 1970 the very first Earth Day was celebrated, marking the birth of grassroots environmental movements throughout the world. Thanks to the vision and drive of Senator Gaylord Nelson, from our neighboring state of Wisconsin, the Earth Day movement is responsible for many of the organizations and laws which are still working to protect our environment today.

Difficulty Level: This hike is appropriate for all ability levels. The hike will traverse and touch all landscapes within Deer Grove East, from wetland to prairie to forested. The surfaces used for the hike will include asphalt, packed grass, and dirt single track.

If due to weather conditions, the natural surface trails are unusable, we will still hike using the entirety of the asphalt trail within Deer Grove East.

Duration: The hike will be approximately two hours with the maximum distance of the hike approximately 3.5 miles.

Parking / Meeting location: Park at the Deer Grove East entrance which is located on Dundee Road (Route 68). The entrance is approximately a third of a mile west of the intersection of Dundee and Hicks Road in Palatine. Park immediately upon entering the preserve. We will meet at the trail which is located within a block of the entrance

What to wear/bring: Water is not available at the Preserve. Be sure to bring your water and enough to last the duration of the hike. With the unpredictability of spring weather, dress appropriately for the temperature forecast for the day. It is best to dress in layers which can be removed as the day warms. Footwear designed for hiking would be best. Optional equipment: trekking poles, rucksacks for clothing, water, etc.

Meet your volunteer guide: Tom is retired after a 30-plus-year career in Information Technology. He’s an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys exploring the woods through day hikes, snowshoeing, trail running and alpine skiing. Tom especially enjoys the solitude and wonder of our forest preserves.

This event is free, but please register to secure your spot. If for some reason you can’t make it, please cancel your ticket. If you have any questions about this walk or the Trailblazers Walking Series, contact Sydney Armstead, Engagement Program Manager, at sydney@fotfp.org.
