Indian Road Woods – Get to Know the North Branch Hiking Series
ALL HIKES IN THIS SERIES ARE FREE AND FAMILY FRIENDLY.
Continuing upstream from Forest Glen, the third hike in our series is at Indian Road Woods. Here we’ll also find a large floodplain, but areas of the upland woods and river bluffs have been well managed and restored by volunteers. Some volunteer efforts include the addition of rustic trails and erosion control features on the slopes overlooking the floodplains. The site also has a small restored prairie.
On this hike we’ll explore two of the smaller preserves on the North Branch. We’ll also peak over the river and take a look at Edgebrook Woods, an unmanaged preserve with nice river bluffs and a system of small streams.
Important details: Face coverings are required when social distancing isn’t possible. Parts of this hike will be on dirt paths and off-trail. Trails might be muddy, so boots are recommended. We usually wait until one hour before the event to send out a notice of cancellation. So please watch your emails on the day of the hike.
We’ll meet toward the far end of the parking lot, in front of the prairie, near where the parking lot hits a dead end. Look for yellow “volunteer” signs to mark the meeting spot.
For questions, please contact Derek Ziomber, North Branch Field Organizer, at derek@fotfp.org.
“Get to Know the North Branch Hiking Series” consists of 15 hikes throughout the year to showcase the different forest preserves on the North Branch of the Chicago River. As we make our way upstream, visiting most of the forest preserves along the North Branch, we’ll discover the unique flora, fauna, natural history, human history, and conservation efforts at each site. Each hike will be led by Derek Ziomber, Friends’ North Branch Field Organizer, a passionate steward and enthusiastic guide who is sure to make you fall in love with this unique region of our forest preserves.
Join us for one or challenge yourself to attend all 15 hikes. As an added incentive – for those who want to really get to know the North Branch – we’re offering special gifts for people who attend at least five of the hikes in this series.
