Forest Glen Woods Seed Work

June 20: 10:00 AM1:00 PM

Join us for a nature walk in the woods while we work on some seed tasks.  Attendees will walk through some areas less frequented by visitors.

The group will spread some native seed in various habitats in the preserve. Along with sowing seeds we’ll collect seeds from 2 or 3 species of native plants as well. Participants will learn how to identify the selected plants and the various methods used to take the seed from the plant.

Difficulty level: The walk will be on unpaved paths, and in some areas the ground will not be level. Stepping over obstacles such as tree roots is required.

Parking/Meeting location: The group meets at the end of the parking lot near the picnic shelter.

Meet your volunteer guide: Diane has a lifelong interest in nature and has volunteered with the Forest Preserves of Cook County since 2019. Her particular area of focus is on native plants. As a certified seed collection leader she also collects and sows native seeds in conjunction with the North Branch Restoration Project. As an avid hiker, she has formed and led fitness hiking groups for 10+ years.

What to wear/bring: Water for hydration, sun and insect protection are all recommended. Hiking boots or footwear good for dirt paths, some muddy, and uneven surfaces are best. Bring a snack if you want one for the short break.

This event is free, but please register to secure your spot. If you have any questions about this walk or the Trailblazers Walking Series, contact Sydney Armstead, Engagement Program Manager, at sydney@fotfp.org.
