Forest Glen Woods – Get to Know the North Branch Hiking Series

March 20, 2022: 1:00 PM3:00 PM

ALL HIKES IN THIS SERIES ARE FREE AND FAMILY FRIENDLY.

The second hike in our series is at Forest Glen Woods, just up the river from LaBagh. Forest Glen is another urban forest preserve and it has many similarities to LaBagh Woods. Most of the site has been altered by human activities that included cattle grazing, farming, logging, and quarrying in settlement times. But volunteers are working to recreate the habitats that were once found at Forest Glen.

On this hike we’ll explore the floodplains and river bluffs at Forest Glen. We’ll talk about how the natural resources in this preserve both harmed it and helped it to survive to this day. And we’ll visit the highest bridge on the North Branch, providing beautiful bird’s eye views from above the trees.

Important details: Face coverings are required when social distancing isn’t possible. Parts of this hike will be on dirt paths and off-trail. Trails might be snowy or muddy, so boots are recommended. We usually wait until one hour before the event to send out a notice of cancellation. So please watch your emails on the day of the hike.

There is only one parking lot at Forest Glen Woods. We’ll meet toward the far end of the lot. Look for yellow “volunteer” signs to mark the meeting spot.

For questions, please contact Derek Ziomber, North Branch Field Organizer, at derek@fotfp.org.

“Get to Know the North Branch Hiking Series” consists of 15 hikes throughout the year to showcase the different forest preserves on the North Branch of the Chicago River. As we make our way upstream, visiting most of the forest preserves along the North Branch, we’ll discover the unique flora, fauna, natural history, human history, and conservation efforts at each site. Each hike will be led by Derek Ziomber, Friends’ North Branch Field Organizer, a passionate steward and enthusiastic guide who is sure to make you fall in love with this unique region of our forest preserves.

Join us for one or challenge yourself to attend all 15 hikes. As an added incentive – for those who want to really get to know the North Branch – we’re offering special gifts for people who attend at least five of the hikes in this series.
