Compass Plant Challenge with Poplar Creek Prairie Stewards

October 4, 2020: 12:00 AM

9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Meeting location: Carl Hansen Woods parking lot in Hoffman Estates

Have you noticed that tall, yellow flower towering above the prairie? It’s our own prairie superstar – The Compass Plant (Silphium laciniatium)! We are dedicating a stewardship day to gather as much seed as we can from this native icon, and we’ll divide into teams to take on the challenge. How much seed can we collect in one hour? We’ll wrap up with prizes for the team that collects the most seeds. Please remember to wear a mask and bring your own water; feel free to bring your own lunch and join us for conversation following the workday!

Please RSVP to Diana at dgranitto@msn.com, by Thursday, October 1 to let us know if you will attend. This will allow us to plan the team sizes and meet social distancing guidelines.

To help you prepare for a productive day:

  • Bring water and a snack.
  • Bring work gloves, if you have some. You will be provided some of you don’t.
  • Dress according to the weather. Closed toe, water proof shoes are a must.
  • Apply insect repellent. We often have some on hand if you forget.
  • Wear your MASK – you will not be able to participate if you don’t have a mask.
