Trailblazers Walk: Swallow Cliff Woods

July 16, 2022: 10:00 AM12:00 PM

The Yellow Trail – the trail we will be primarily walking – was rated the best trail in Illinois by Backpacker Magazine. The trails are in great shape and currently the wild geraniums and the woodland phlox are in full bloom! The walk will take approximately 2 hours and will be 3-4 miles in length, depending on the group size and fitness levels. Be assured that we’ll cater to the group’s needs.

During the walk we’ll cover the following topics, among others:

  • The geologic formation of the area
  • Leave no trace ethics
  • Local flora and fauna
  • Some of the history of the Swallow Cliff Forest Preserve (did you know there was a ski jump there?)

Difficulty level: Intermediate hiking pace

Parking/Meeting location: At 40 Acre Woods parking lot (1/4 mile East of LaGrange Rd. off of 119th Street)

Bruce Butterfield will be your guide: Bruce’s love of the outdoors has led him to visit every state in the union (multiple times) and explore all 62 of our National Parks. He has also hiked the trails of Swallow Cliff Woods for 42 years!

This event is free, but please register to secure your spot. If you have any questions about this walk or the Trailblazers Walking Series, contact Sydney Armstead, Engagement Program Manager, at sydney@fotfp.org.
