Trailblazers Walk: Red Gate Woods

June 6, 2022: 10:00 AM11:30 AM

Discover the history behind the first nuclear reactor in the world. We will cover the atomic age during WWII, the impact on the Forest Preserve Site M, and the closure, clean up and reopening of Red Gate Woods. Depending on trail conditions, a brief trail hike will follow. The trail is single file on rugged terrain. If trail conditions are poor due to mud, the perimeter of the woods will be an option for a more casual stroll. All adults and teens are welcome to join.

Important: Please bring mosquito/tick repellant. The trails this year at the Cook County forest preserves have reported a high count of disease carrying ticks. Also, be sure to bring plenty of water and some trail snacks.

Meet at Red Gate Woods East Parking Lot. Learn more about the site and find a map of Red Gate Woods at https://fpdcc.com/places/locations/red-gate-woods.

This event is free, but please register to secure your spot. If you have any questions about this walk or the Trailblazers Walking Series, contact Sydney Armstead, Engagement Program Manager, at sydney@fotfp.org.
