Little Red Schoolhouse Wildlife & Wildflower Walk
You’re invited to explore this wonder-filled nature center here with us. After the group finishes viewing the animals indoors we’ll head outdoors to hike the Black Oak Trail. This trail goes through a nice forest filled with native plants and oak trees. Near the end of the hike the trail passes by the Longjohn Slough where waterfowl along with turtles are often seen. Lastly, we’ll look at animals housed outside and enter the little red schoolhouse building filled with artifacts.
Difficulty Level: This is an intermediate-level walk. Walking on unpaved paths with occasional obstacles in the path is required. The pace will be moderate. Some agility and awareness of the surroundings are needed.
Parking/meeting location: Park in one of the 2 parking lots. Then go to the nature center building. Look for the group just inside the building entrance.
Meet your volunteer guide: Diane has a lifelong interest in nature and volunteers with the Forest Preserves of Cook County. Her particular area of focus is on native plants. As a certified seed collection leader, she collects and sows native seeds in conjunction with the North Branch Restoration Project. An avid hiker, she’s formed and led fitness hiking groups for 10+ years.
What to wear/bring: Hiking boots and weather-appropriate clothing are strongly recommended. Sun and bug protection are suggested as well as water for hydration.
