Bunker Hill North Flatwoods Volunteer Workday
Spend Chicago River Day at Bunker Hill North Flatwoods!
This site protects a large area of one of the rarest plant communities in Illinois, known as a Northern Flatwoods. Flatwoods are found where a dense layer of clay lies near the surface of the soil. This clay prevents rain from draining in the spring, although flatwoods can become very dry in the summer. Plants here must be adapted to withstand both very wet and dry conditions. At the center of this preserve is an old-growth oak woodland with massive trees, including tall and straight Pin Oaks that give this site the feeling of a woodland cathedral.
In recent years, a large community of volunteers have begun to care for this unique preserve and the results are already evident. Come meet other nature lovers and make a visible impact for Chicago’s preserves.
Please wear sturdy shoes and dress in layers, avoiding synthetic materials.
