September 19, 2022: 12:30 PM2:00 PM

Please join us as we explore the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) construction at this urban oasis and enjoy the flora and fauna that exists on the Southeast side of Chicago.

During the walk we’ll cover the following topics, among others:

  • Explore a preserve in the heart of an urban area.
  • Discuss the CCC constructions at this preserve.
  • Enjoy the flora and fauna of a preserve in the heart of an urban area.

Difficulty level: Easy to moderate

Mileage: Approximately 2-mile hike using cement and unpaved trails.

Parking & Meet Up Spot: Enter at Western Avenue, by the CCC building on the west side of the preserve. Or River Forest (parking lot off of Chicago Avenue) west of Thatcher on the south side of Chicago Ave. We’ll gather at the entrance to the trail in the parking lot.

What to bring/wear: Water, sunscreen, comfortable clothing/shoes, mosquito/tick repellent, and rain poncho if needed.

Meet your volunteer guide: As a lifetime resident of Cook County, Martha has explored the forest preserves since she was a young child. She has done quite a bit of horseback riding through the Palos area exploring the trails, flora, and fauna. She studied natural history including geology, ecology, general earth science, and Native American Nations as well as general history in college.

This event is free, but please register to secure your spot. If you have any questions about this walk or the Trailblazers Walking Series, contact Sydney Armstead, Engagement Program Manager, at sydney@fotfp.org.
