Trailblazers Walk: Brezina Woods
Please join us as we explore the Salt Creek Trail from Brezina Woods to Maple Avenue. We’ll enjoy the flora and fauna of this area. The river is a migratory bird route as it heads towards the Des Plaines River. Ducks, geese, herons, and egrets are frequent visitors to the Creek’s edge. Summer visitors, such as the indigo bunting and other summer nesting birds, have been frequently spotted here. It’s also a great place to observe woodland birds along the path!
During the walk we’ll cover the following topics, among others:
- Birds in the area
- History of the site
Difficulty level: Easy to moderate
Mileage (rough estimate): Approximately 4 miles. The option to continue to the marsh area will be determined on the hike.
Parking & Meet Up Spot: Brezina Woods on Mannheim Road south of 22nd Street in La Grange Park. The entrance is on the East side of Mannheim approx. ¾ mile South of 22nd Street (Cermak Road). Meet at the parking area by the Northeast corner. There is a trail entrance to the parking lot.
What to bring/wear: Water, sunscreen, comfortable clothing/shoe, mosquito/tick repellent, and rain poncho if needed.
Meet your volunteer guide: As a lifetime resident of Cook County, Martha has explored the forest preserves since she was a young child. She has done quite a bit of horseback riding through the Palos area exploring the trails, flora, and fauna. She studied natural history including geology, ecology, general earth science, and Native American Nations as well as general history in college.
