Trailblazers Walk: Red Gate Woods

August 18, 2022: 10:00 AM11:30 AM

Please join us as we present a short history and discussion of Site A, Plot M at Red Gate Woods. Your guide will encourage discussion on the use of nuclear power today and its potential benefits and hazards to the environment. This is an interactive discussion and instructional event and not a typical hike.

During the walk we will discuss:

  • The early Atomic Program in the United States
  • How Red Gate Woods became part of the Manhattan Project
  • Work done for reopening of Red Gate Woods to the public

Difficulty level: Easy, leisurely walk

Mileage (rough estimate): Less than one mile, in case of rain we will use the pavilion area if not already in use. Plan a small walk around the area including the concrete enclosure.

Parking & Meet Up Spot: Meet at Red Gate Woods at the east side of the parking lot.

What to bring/wear: Water, sunscreen, comfortable clothing/shoes, mosquito/tick repellent

Meet your volunteer guide: As a lifetime resident of Cook County, Martha has explored the forest preserves since she was a young child. She has done quite a bit of horseback riding through the Palos area exploring the trails, flora, and fauna. She studied natural history including geology, ecology, general earth science, and Native American Nations as well as general history in college.

This event is free, but please register to secure your spot. If you have any questions about this walk or the Trailblazers Walking Series, contact Sydney Armstead, Engagement Program Manager, at sydney@fotfp.org.
