Trailblazers Walk: Somme Prairie Wildflower Hike

August 13, 2022: 10:00 AM12:00 PM

On this walk, we will explore a rare, ecological gem located right here, in Northbrook! Somme Prairie Nature Preserve is part woodland and part savanna. We’ll have time to identify just a fraction of the vast number of native plants here. Join us as we socialize and enjoy a beautiful, leisurely walk.

Topics we’ll cover during this walk include:

  • The background of this Nature Preserve
  • Plant and wildflower identification

Difficulty level: Moderate. There are no hills but be prepared to walk over unlevel terrain. The trails are all single file on dirt with tall vegetation on either side.

Mileage (rough estimate): 2.7 miles total. Two miles on the prairie and a .7 mile wooded loop in the forest.

Parking: Meet in Somme Woods parking lot by the Information sign. Park immediately after turning into the lot. The sign is right there. We will walk to the prairie. See map – https://goo.gl/maps/ft65ZmAK9cZozmQr6.

What to bring/wear:  Wear long pants because the vegetation is tall on narrow paths. Bring bug spray. Bring plenty of water to hydrate. A sunhat can be helpful because we will spend about an hour and a half on an open sunny prairie.

Meet your volunteer guide: Lynette has led her own hiking group in the north branch preserves for several years. She loves leisurely walks that focus on wellness and immersion in nature while socializing with local members.

This event is free, but please register to secure your spot. If you have any questions about this walk or the Trailblazers Walking Series, contact Sydney Armstead, Engagement Program Manager, at sydney@fotfp.org.
