Chicago River Fun6 Free Events between August 23-October 25!

Friends of the Forest Preserves and our partners bring you a series of free recreational events in the Calumet region! Bring your family to canoe, bike, and fish around the beautiful Calumet River region.

In partnership with the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, Friends of the Chicago River, Friends of the Major Taylor Trail, the Southeast Environmental Task Force, and Fishin’ Buddies. Funded by Illinois Department of Natural Resources Coast Management Program and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Wolf Lake: Family Fishing

Saturday, September 6, 10 am – 2 pm
With nearly six miles of shore line Wolf Lake is a great place to fish. You could catch largemouth bass, northern pike, bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie, bullhead, walleye, and yellow perch!

canoeCanoe on Powderhorn Lake

Saturday, September 20, 10 am – noon
Perfect for beginners! Nestled in Powderhorn Prairie Nature Preserve, the lake is clean and calm, surrounded by a beautiful forest preserve. Every participant gets a pair of binoculars to keep. Who knows what kinds of birds you may spot?

bikeLeisure Bike Tour of the Burnham Greenway

Sunday, September 21, 9 am – 11 am
Bike the Burnham Greenway from the Green Lake Aquatic Center to Calumet City Prairie and back (about 4.2 miles). We’ll stop along the way at Sand Ridge Prairie and Wentworth Prairie. Ages 14 and under must wear a helmet.

canoePaddle the Little Calumet River

Sunday, September 28, 10 am – 3 pm
You will be surprised by the calm and beauty as we paddle about 5 miles from Beaubien Woods to the Little Calumet Boat Launch. Binoculars for you to keep are provided.

bikeFamily Bike Ride on the Major Taylor Trail

Saturday, October 25, 10 am – 1 pm
We’ll leisurely ride from Dan Ryan Woods to Whistler Woods, stopping occasionally. At Whistler, we’ll participate in the effort to make the woods healthy again before riding back. Total riding distance is about 12 miles. Ages 14 and under must wear a helmet.
