SUMMARY:Oxbow Prairie Volunteer Workday
DESCRIPTION:Formed by an old loop in the river’s course\, lies the Oxbow Prairie. \n\n\n\nThis old oxbow in the Chicago River’s North Branch is a combination of low\, wet prairie soils and slightly higher mesic prairie soils. A small open savanna lies on what was once the east bank of the river. The mesic prairie had an abundance of Eurasian grasses\, Queen Anne’s lace and tall goldenrod. With management\, the more conservative prairie plants such as northern dropseed\, stiff goldenrod\, golden alexanders and big bluestem grass are returning. \n\n\n\nThe wetter areas are richest in native plants\, including cup plant\, ironweed\, tall meadow-rue\, water parsnip\, cordgrass\, Virginia rye\, and numerous kinds of sedges. \n\n\n\nA small oak savanna on the old east bank has swamp white and bur oaks\, in the words of landscape architect and restorationist Tom Vanderpoel\, “a wonderful micro oak savanna.” \n\n\n\nJoin North Branch Restoration Project volunteers and enjoy a different view here! \n\n\n\nYouth under age 18 must be accompanied by a legal parent/guardian or attend with a chaperoned organized youth group (school\, scouts\, church). \n\n\n\nVisit The North Branch Restoration Project on Facebook! \n\n\n\nDirections: From the south\, enter the drive off of Caldwell Avenue across from Tonty; proceed ~1/4 mile\, staying to the right at the split. DESCRIPTION:The Miami Woods Forest Preserve covers 112 acres stretching along the west side of the North Branch of the Chicago River from Oakton Street northward to Dempster Street.  It is bounded on the west side by Caldwell Avenue\, Waukegan Road and development at the intersection of Waukegan Road and Dempster Street. The land on the east side of the river forms the Saint Paul Woods Forest Preserve. \n\n\n\nMiami Woods and Prairie contain important remnants of the original grasslands and woodlands that formed the natural heritage of the greater Chicago area. Miami Woods and Prairie (except the turf grass picnic areas) is to achieve restoration to the highest ecological condition possible using a minimum amount of management intervention. SUMMARY:Trailblazers: Bunker Hill  - Tall Trees Walk
DESCRIPTION:Meet other people who enjoy nature and walking in the woods. We’ll go along the North Branch of the Chicago River to take in the views of the water and the beauty of many tall trees. We’ll identify three species along the way. \n\n\n\nThe walk starts by picking up the North Branch Trail and heading north. It’s common to see deer\, waterfowl\, and birds of prey\, along with late summer wildflowers in bloom in areas near the path. Many large and beautiful oaks are also on this route. We’ll look at 3 species that are easier to identify than oaks on the trail. It’s an out-and-back program\, so the second half of the walk will offer south-facing views. \n\n\n\nDifficulty level: This hike will be on paved paths and move at a moderate pace. Navigating a small incline or two will be required and fairly easy to do \n\n\n\nParking/Meeting location: Park near the Grove #1 marker. Grove #1 is just inside the preserve at the Caldwell Avenue entrance. We’ll be as close to the marker as possible to make it easiest to locate us. \n\n\n\nMeet your Volunteer Guide: Diane has a lifelong interest in nature. She completed the University of Illinois Master Naturalist program in 2023 and is a certified seed collector for Cook County Forest Preserves. An avid hiker\, she has formed and led walking groups for 15+ years. \n\n\n\nWhat to Wear and Bring: Water for hydration\, good sun protection\, a hat\, and good walking shoes/boots. DESCRIPTION:This guided walk is designed to help you leave your daily cares behind\, align your chakras\, and tap into the deep spiritual meanings hidden in the woods. We will start with a grounding meditation to balance our internal energy\, take an intentional walk on the trail\, and finish with a beautiful unity ritual to connect us all. Nature is ready to heal us\, and the path is open. \n\n\n\nDifficulty Level: Easy. This will be a slow-paced walk on a mostly gravel and dirt trail. The terrain is flat. The trail is mostly shaded with some sunny areas. We will walk in and out on the same path. This walk is 2 miles round trip. \n\n\n\nParking and Meeting Location: Jerome Huppert Woods is located on North Thatcher Ave\, just South of West Fullerton Ave\, River Grove\, Illinois 60171 (across the street from Elmwood Park High School). Parking is free and abundant on site. We will gather near the entrance sign. \n\n\n\nMeet Your Guide: Janine is a registered nurse by profession and a forest guide by passion. On her health care journey\, she has learned that true wellness requires us to be healthy in all areas of our lives\, mind\, body\, and spirit. Her guided events are designed to restore that vital balance by combining mindfulness while exploring the natural world around us every day. DESCRIPTION:We will start by exploring the plants and animals outside of the Thatcher Woods Trailside Museum. Then we’ll depart from the museum on a southbound path. On this walk\, we will enjoy the beauty and tranquility of nature and stop for sensory breaks to note what we can see\, hear\, and smell in the forest near the Des Plaines River. \n\n\n\nDifficulty level: Moderate pace. 1-2 miles out and back from the Trailside Museum. Partial paved and partial dirt path. There is a portion of the walk that requires up and down on stairs. \n\n\n\nParking/Meeting Location: Thatcher Woods Trailside Museum parking lot\, South of Chicago Ave. Meet outside the main entrance of the Trailside Museum\, on the South side of the building. \n\n\n\nMeet Your Guide: Leif is a teacher’s assistant from Oak Park. He loves playing soccer and drawing and would love to hike with you whether you are an encyclopedia of nature knowledge or someone just wanting to spend some time outdoors. \n\n\n\nWhat to Bring/Wear: Water\, shoes for hiking/walking\, and weather-appropriate clothing. \n\n\n\nThis event is free\, but please register to secure your spot.

DESCRIPTION:Formed by an old loop in the river’s course\, lies the Oxbow Prairie. \n\n\n\nThis old oxbow in the Chicago River’s North Branch is a combination of low\, wet prairie soils and slightly higher mesic prairie soils. A small open savanna lies on what was once the east bank of the river. The mesic prairie had an abundance of Eurasian grasses\, Queen Anne’s lace and tall goldenrod. With management\, the more conservative prairie plants such as northern dropseed\, stiff goldenrod\, golden alexanders and big bluestem grass are returning. \n\n\n\nThe wetter areas are richest in native plants\, including cup plant\, ironweed\, tall meadow-rue\, water parsnip\, cordgrass\, Virginia rye\, and numerous kinds of sedges. \n\n\n\nA small oak savanna on the old east bank has swamp white and bur oaks\, in the words of landscape architect and restorationist Tom Vanderpoel\, “a wonderful micro oak savanna.” \n\n\n\nJoin North Branch Restoration Project volunteers and enjoy a different view here! \n\n\n\nYouth under age 18 must be accompanied by a legal parent/guardian or attend with a chaperoned organized youth group (school\, scouts\, church). \n\n\n\nVisit The North Branch Restoration Project on Facebook! \n\n\n\nDirections: From the south\, enter the drive off of Caldwell Avenue across from Tonty; proceed ~1/4 mile\, staying to the right at the split. DESCRIPTION:The Miami Woods Forest Preserve covers 112 acres stretching along the west side of the North Branch of the Chicago River from Oakton Street northward to Dempster Street.  It is bounded on the west side by Caldwell Avenue\, Waukegan Road and development at the intersection of Waukegan Road and Dempster Street. The land on the east side of the river forms the Saint Paul Woods Forest Preserve. \n\n\n\nMiami Woods and Prairie contain important remnants of the original grasslands and woodlands that formed the natural heritage of the greater Chicago area. Miami Woods and Prairie (except the turf grass picnic areas) is to achieve restoration to the highest ecological condition possible using a minimum amount of management intervention.
