SUMMARY:Miami Woods and Prairie Volunteer Workday
DESCRIPTION:The Miami Woods Forest Preserve covers 112 acres stretching along the west side of the North Branch of the Chicago River from Oakton Street northward to Dempster Street.  It is bounded on the west side by Caldwell Avenue\, Waukegan Road and development at the intersection of Waukegan Road and Dempster Street. The land on the east side of the river forms the Saint Paul Woods Forest Preserve. \n\n\n\nMiami Woods and Prairie contain important remnants of the original grasslands and woodlands that formed the natural heritage of the greater Chicago area. Miami Woods and Prairie (except the turf grass picnic areas) is to achieve restoration to the highest ecological condition possible using a minimum amount of management intervention. Our approach is to restore natural processes so that the area will become as self-sustaining as possible. \n\n\n\nVisit The North Branch Restoration Project on Facebook! \n\n\n\nYouth under age 18 must be accompanied by a legal parent/guardian or attend with a chaperoned organized youth group (school\, scouts\, church). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDirections: Located on the east side of Caldwell\, two blocks north of Oakton.  Meet in the parking lot for Miami Woods\, look for the Volunteer sign. \n\n\n\nTo volunteer or for more information contact Mike Andrews at mike61950@aol.com

SUMMARY:Trailblazers: Prairie Grasses walk at Miami Woods
DESCRIPTION:Learn about some of the native grasses that grow in our preserves along with others who enjoy being outdoors.  We will identify and discuss three or four species during the walk. \n\n\n\nDifficulty level: This hike will be on both unpaved and paved paths and move at a moderate pace. You may need to navigate small obstacles in the path in some places. \n\n\n\nParking/Meeting location: Park just inside the Caldwell Ave entrance (north of Oakton Av) and join the group at the nature preserve sign (beige sign) by the parking lot.  \n\n\n\nMeet your Volunteer Guide: Diane has a lifelong interest in nature. She completed the University of Illinois Master Naturalist program in 2023\, does restoration work in the preserves\, and is a certified seed collector for Cook County Forest Preserves.  An avid hiker\, she has formed and led walking groups for 15+ years. \n\n\n\nWhat to Wear and Bring: Water\, good sun protection\, a hat\, and good walking shoes/boots. Insects are found in tall grasses\, so insect protection is also highly recommended.  Lightweight clothing with long sleeves and long pants is ideal. \n\n\n\nPhoto credit: Diane Yurksaitis
