SUMMARY:Miami Woods and Prairie Volunteer Workday
DESCRIPTION:The Miami Woods Forest Preserve covers 112 acres stretching along the west side of the North Branch of the Chicago River from Oakton Street northward to Dempster Street.  It is bounded on the west side by Caldwell Avenue\, Waukegan Road and development at the intersection of Waukegan Road and Dempster Street. The land on the east side of the river forms the Saint Paul Woods Forest Preserve. \n\n\n\nMiami Woods and Prairie contain important remnants of the original grasslands and woodlands that formed the natural heritage of the greater Chicago area. Miami Woods and Prairie (except the turf grass picnic areas) is to achieve restoration to the highest ecological condition possible using a minimum amount of management intervention. Our approach is to restore natural processes so that the area will become as self-sustaining as possible. \n\n\n\nVisit The North Branch Restoration Project on Facebook! \n\n\n\nYouth under age 18 must be accompanied by a legal parent/guardian or attend with a chaperoned organized youth group (school\, scouts\, church). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDirections: Located on the east side of Caldwell\, two blocks north of Oakton.  Meet in the parking lot for Miami Woods\, look for the Volunteer sign. \n\n\n\nTo volunteer or for more information contact Mike Andrews at mike61950@aol.com

SUMMARY:Trailblazers: Bunker Hill  - Tall Trees Walk
DESCRIPTION:Meet other people who enjoy nature and walking in the woods. We’ll go along the North Branch of the Chicago River to take in the views of the water and the beauty of many tall trees. We’ll identify three species along the way. \n\n\n\nThe walk starts by picking up the North Branch Trail and heading north. It’s common to see deer\, waterfowl\, and birds of prey\, along with late summer wildflowers in bloom in areas near the path. Many large and beautiful oaks are also on this route. We’ll look at 3 species that are easier to identify than oaks on the trail. It’s an out-and-back program\, so the second half of the walk will offer south-facing views. \n\n\n\nDifficulty level: This hike will be on paved paths and move at a moderate pace. Navigating a small incline or two will be required and fairly easy to do \n\n\n\nParking/Meeting location: Park near the Grove #1 marker. Grove #1 is just inside the preserve at the Caldwell Avenue entrance. We’ll be as close to the marker as possible to make it easiest to locate us. \n\n\n\nMeet your Volunteer Guide: Diane has a lifelong interest in nature. She completed the University of Illinois Master Naturalist program in 2023 and is a certified seed collector for Cook County Forest Preserves. An avid hiker\, she has formed and led walking groups for 15+ years. \n\n\n\nWhat to Wear and Bring: Water for hydration\, good sun protection\, a hat\, and good walking shoes/boots.
